Layered lighting: the three layers
A room with a single ceiling light is a room with a single mood. Layered lighting is how designers build depth — and it only takes three layers.
The three layers
Ambient: the base light that lets you move around — soft ceiling or wall fixtures. Task: focused light where you work or read — desk lamps, under-cabinet strips. Accent: light aimed at what deserves attention — art, shelving, a textured wall.
Rules of thumb
Three light sources minimum per room. Dimmers on everything dimmable. Warm color temperature (2700–3000K) for living spaces. And never rely on one layer to do another’s job — a bright ceiling light is a poor reading lamp.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I start in a rental?
Two floor lamps and a dimmable bulb in the existing fixture gets you 80% of the effect with zero rewiring.
